It is quite common for IT Organizations to create fear in the minds of employee to make them do all kind of tasks an organization required them to do. It could be either day to day tasks or certain ad-hoc tasks or may be certain other tasks which may not be beneficial for employees. An employee always lives in:-
- Fear of losing their job
- Fear of getting the career ruined
- Fear of not fulfilling the family commitments
- Fear for future prospects
IT Organizations reaping benefits from employee fear

Sometimes, I think an employee fear is the biggest asset of an IT Organization which they use it time to time to accomplish their goals. While there are all kind of labour laws to protect the rights of employees but companies uses their master card of “employment agreement signed by employees” during joining to make them work. We have so many day to day cases where it is quite evident that there are little being done to protect the interest of employees.
This is more prevalent in Asian and African countries where there are no strict laws to protect the employee rights. As a result US and European clients takes full advantage of the situation as they can’t do the same in their home countries where there are very strict EU and US laws regarding this. They make Asian and African employees work for longer hours without giving much thought about their work life balance and partner organization can’t do anything due to threat of contract or project termination so they always agree on all the client points.
This does not end here. As service based companies revenue mostly comes from US and EU clients, they also threaten employees to keep stretching their working hours and make the client happy by doing whatever client asks, no matter how wrong it is. You can do very little on that and even not allowed to show your disagreement as this will be seen as disrespect to the client. While in the name of reporting grievances, there is an entire grievance redressal eco-system exists in organization but let me tell you it only favors the client. Under no circumstances, any action would be taken against the client as they are revenue generator.
As per the internal grievance, next priority goes to the manager or executive level employees who manipulate the teams for their use by delegating their work to the team members or take credits of all their hard work(no matter how incompetent he/she is) in front of client so that they get regular promotion and good feedback. While this can’t be complained, often because it is said that manager is known to be the face of team and single point of contact but the same is used by them to manipulate team’s work as per his/her needs and convenience.
I am very surprised to see that the entire ecosystem is designed to favor a certain set of people in the organization and it was never meant for the general workforce who work day and night with utmost dedication to accomplish the organizational works. While the culture of living in constant fear has become a very profitable business for IT Organizations but at the same time this also limits the aspirations of employees to do something different in their life.
By the time an employee realizes, it will be too late to do any innovative work or think differently to explore the opportunities available in the market. So fear is the most important factor that an employee needs to identify and learn to deal with it to move forward in their life and achieve the required goals.
